Blaine Calkins MP Report July 2011

Keeping our borders secure and our communities safe

In my travels through the riding, I often get asked “Blaine, what is Canada doing about criminals who are seeking refuge in Canada?  How secure are our borders?”  One of our government’s top priorities is keeping Canadians safe and secure from those who commit heinous crimes, and to keep our borders secure from criminals seeking to exploit our immigration system.

Our government is taking serious steps to crack down on illegal immigrants.  Last week, Minister Kenney announced that some 1,800 people have obtained their Canadian citizenship through fraudulent means and that our government intends to revoke their status as Canadians.  Last year, our Conservative government introduced legislation to streamline the time-consuming and expensive revocation process so that immigrants who supply fake documents and lie their way into Canada suffer the appropriate consequences.

As well, last week we heard from Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, and Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, who asked Canadians to help identify 32 individuals accused of being complicit in war crimes or crimes against humanity.  Those who have been involved will find no haven on our shores and they will be located, and they will face the consequences.

By publishing these suspects information on the CBSA website and opening up a tip hotline, we hope that all Canadians assist our government in apprehending those who attempt to remain in the shadows of Canada’s legal system.

Stephen Harper’s Conservative Government received a strong mandate to keep our streets and communities safe, as well as maintain the integrity of our immigration system.  That’s why we’re asking for the public’s help in identifying these individuals who have attempted to avoid prosecution for the crimes they have committed abroad.  With your help, we can find the other 29 suspects who are abusing our immigration system.  Please visit http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/wc-cg/menu-eng.html and report any information to the Border Watch Line at 1 888 502-9060.
