ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE, ALBERTA, February 9, 2007 – Improvements to Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site of Canada will provide better learning opportunities and contribute to more meaningful and memorable visitor experiences. This winter, several of the site’s facilities will be improved and plans are underway for new exhibits, an upgraded theatre, expanded retail operation and a wider range of special events and interpretation programs offered.
On behalf of the Honourable John Baird, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Blaine Calkins, Member of Parliament for Wetaskiwin, today announced the launch of a $1.4 million phase of redevelopment at Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site, including significant improvements at the visitor centre.
"This redevelopment project will renew the site's vibrancy to a state befitting its rich history and the dynamic local community,” said Minister Baird. "The story of Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site began over 200 years ago and tells of intense fur trade rivalry, the contributions of Aboriginal people and David Thompson, one of North America’s greatest explorers. We are committed to ensuring this story is shared with future generations."
The goal of the Rocky Mountain House redevelopment project is to provide meaningful high-quality visitor experiences in a manner that ensures the site’s long-term protection. This will be accomplished through improved services, programs and facilities.
“Parks Canada is committed to protecting our heritage so Canadians can experience these special places and be inspired by the stories of our nation,” said Mr. Calkins. “These improvements – plus the work with the Rocky Mountain House community and Friends – will enhance the ability to provide meaningful experiences and learning opportunities while protecting this precious site.”
Last year, the planning phase began and key functional needs such as obtaining safe drinking water were addressed. This winter, the planning team and partners will continue the development of new and dynamic site exhibits and programming to better meet visitors’ needs and expectations.
Public Works and Government Services Canada awarded a competitive contract of $1.4 million to Shunda Consulting and Construction of Red Deer, Alberta, for the visitor centre redevelopment. This work is the cornerstone of the major site facility improvements taking place this winter.
