New Firearms Marking Regulations Deferred to 2009
12/7/2007

Following consultation with stakeholders, our government decided to defer the implementation of the Firearms Marking Regulations from December 1, 2007 to December 1, 2009.

Back in December of 2004, the previous Liberal government enacted regulations requiring that imported firearms be marked with “CA” (for Canada) and the last two digits of the year of import.  Like the present long-gun registry, this would be nothing short of an expensive and ineffective attempt to reduce crime.

The decision to defer will allow the Government of Canada time to consult with law enforcement agencies and industries on better and more effective ways to protect the public from gun violence.
