Calkins elected Chair of Canada – Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group
For Immediate Release April 7, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario: Blaine Calkins, MP for Wetaskiwin was elected Chairman of the Canada – Poland Parliamentary Friendship Group at the annual general Meeting on April 1, 2008.
Mr. Calkins explained that “the main purpose of the Association is to work for a greater friendship and goodwill between parliamentarians from Canada and Poland. It endeavours to further cooperative relations and mutual understanding between the two parliaments and the people of Canada and Poland.”
The importance of our mutual relationship was evident during a visit to Gdansk last week by the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper. Our Prime Minister outlined the significant achievements in Canada – Poland relations. Of particular importance is the efforts by soldiers from both countries who are helping the people of Afghanistan rebuild their country after decades of war and turmoil.
“Canada’s recent decision to lift the visa requirement for Polish travellers coming to Canada shows that we are committed to the free and secure movement of people between our great countries,” said Calkins. “As well, the Social Security Agreement that was signed between Canada and Poland on April 2nd will bring immediate benefits to over 5,000 Canadians by coordinating pension benefits between Canada and Poland.”
“I am looking forward to working with Canadian and Polish parliamentarians on issues of mutual interest and to further advance our cooperative relationship.” said the Wetaskiwin MP.
