BLAINE CALKINS – SPECIAL MP REPORT
December 2, 2008
The parties that Canadians rejected on October 14th are trying to seize power through the back door. After approving the Speech from the Throne, the opposition parties in the House of Commons now are trying to orchestrate a backroom deal to “take” power rather than “earn” it. Our Conservative Government’s focus is the economy, but Opposition parties have their own priorities.
Neither the Liberals nor the Bloc Quebecois have a mandate to form a coalition. In fact, they campaigned against it. During the election, the Liberals told voters they could not govern in a coalition with the NDP because Layton “does not understand the economy”. Since the Liberals believe that they are the natural governing party, they are now willing to do whatever it takes to regain power.
Just as the Liberals do not have a mandate to form a coalition with the NDP after campaigning against such a coalition, the NDP certainly does not have a mandate to implement a secret deal with a party that wants to break up Canada.
The socialists and the separatists cooked up a deal that pre-dated the Government’s recent Economic and Fiscal Update. This take-over isn’t about the economy or the Government’s Economic and Fiscal Update. The Economic and Fiscal Update was merely a trigger to execute a longstanding secret deal between the NDP and Quebec separatists who will hold the balance of power in the new proposed coalition government.
The reality is that this is all about Liberal entitlements, coupled with the NDP’s willingness to sign a deal with anyone for a chance to grab power rather than win it.
All of our Government’s accomplishments over the last three years are at risk of being wiped-out. For 13 years, Canadians had to cope with a Liberal Party crime policy that put a priority on the rights of offenders and refused to hold criminals accountable for their acts. Conservative initiatives such as the tough new rules that ensure that gun criminals, impaired drivers, and violent and sexual offenders serve tougher sentences for their crimes could be turned back. The decisive steps taken by our government like raising the age of sexual consent are in jeopardy.
As the coalition rushes into a multi-billion dollar spending spree, taxes will go up not down, a long-term deficit is inevitable. There will be no marketing freedom for grain farmers and the firearms amnesty and steps toward the dismantling of the Firearms Registry will be lost.
This is not the democracy that our veterans fought for. Democracy means “rule by the people”. Canadians should have a say about where things should go from here.
